Formed in Ryazan, Russia, in 2011 at a This Will Destroy You concert, the cinematic post-rock, industrial electronic, and ambient abstract project I am waiting for you last summer (IWFYLS) return with the announcement of their new album Without/Within, due for release on October 31st.

Initially founded by Sasha Sokolov and Evgenii Popov, and later joined by Lev Nikitin to expand the project’s electronic dimension, IWFYLS have become known for their immersive live performances—meticulously crafted audiovisual environments that are kinetic, unpredictable, and charged with near-physical intensity.

Today, the cinematic three-piece share a new single, “Redshift”—an epic, textural journey that Popov notes was “mostly recorded while living on the island of Bali.” True to IWFYLS’s ethos of bridging sound and vision, “Redshift” offers a fluid, immersive narrative that reflects on the nature of essence itself:

At some point, we realized that the texture often found in metal music—raw, forceful, overloaded—resonates deeply with the harshness of certain natural and cosmic phenomena. But we weren’t thinking of metal as a genre or cultural reference; we were drawn purely to its physical texture. There’s something in that rhythm, speed, and saturation that feels elemental—like flows of cold, directionless energy.

Popov continues:When I think about space, I don’t imagine the clean, sterile silence often portrayed in sci-fi. I imagine something much more aggressive—blurred, loud, overwhelming. Distortion in a diffuse, open sonic space evokes a kind of processed terror, something both natural and cosmic, but hard to put into words. In the past, people used synthesizers to represent the cosmos—but that language feels outdated now. We wanted to express that sensation differently: not through polished, futuristic sounds, but through overloaded textures. It’s not about space as a metaphor or aesthetic—it’s about expressing what it feels like to confront the unknown.”

Without/Within centers on a deep exploration of consciousness—how it emerges, perceives, and divides the world into “inner” and “outer.” “Redshift” marks the second installment in that journey.

Their relentless pursuit of movement and sonic experimentation has taken IWFYLS across the world, with performances at SXSW, dunk! festival, and Magnetic Fields, where they’ve shared stages with This Will Destroy You, 65daysofstatic, Alcest, and Rosetta. That cinematic quality is no accident—Sasha Sokolov’s background in composing for major film trailers (Jurassic World, Captain America: Winter Soldier) brings a widescreen gravity to the band’s sound, with each track unfolding like a scene from an unmade film.

“Redshift” is out August 29th on all digital streaming platforms.
Without/Within follows on October 31st.

I am waiting for you last summer Bio:

Few acts bridge the divide between sound and vision as I am waiting for you last summer. A project that operates at the intersection of cinematic post-rock, industrial electronics, and ambient abstraction, their work is less a collection of songs than an unfolding narrative—fluid, immersive, and deeply visual. Their compositions, sculpted from towering guitars, modular textures, and spectral vocals, pulse with a sense of vastness, evoking both the tactile and the ephemeral. This widescreen approach is no accident; Sasha Sokolov’s work on major film trailers (Jurassic World, Captain America: Winter Soldier) lends their music an undeniable cinematic gravity, each piece unfurling like a scene in a film yet to be made. But it’s in their live performances that I am waiting for you last summer truly come into their own. Their concerts are not merely sets but meticulously constructed audiovisual environments—kinetic, unpredictable, and charged with an almost physical intensity. Real-time generative visuals react dynamically to the music, amplifying its emotional contours and transforming each show into a singular, immersive experience. This relentless pursuit of motion has taken them across the world, from SXSW and dunk! festival to Magnetic Fields, where they have shared stages with This Will Destroy You, 65daysofstatic, Alcest, and Rosetta. With Without/Within, they push further into uncharted territory, deconstructing and reconstructing their sound into something even more fluid, hypnotic, and transportive.
The act was founded in Ryazan, Russia in 2011.
