Hana Giraldo on New Music, Engagement to Kyle Massey

Hana Giraldo and former Disney Channel star-turned-musician Kyle Massey announced their engagement recently. To celebrate, the couple released “Paradise,” a moody EDM track made for a late night drive.

Giraldo, the daughter of rock lengend Pat Benatar and her guitarist-husband Neil Giraldo, debuted with “Broke My Heart” in 2023. “Reputation,” her biggest single so far, came out last year.

After a photoshoot in Los Angeles, we talked to Girardo about the engagement, recording with Massey, and connecting with her parents’ music.

Congrats on your engagement. Tell us how Kyle proposed.
Thank you. It still feels like a dream that keeps replaying in my mind. I am usually impossible to surprise but he managed it. We went to the Four Seasons for what I thought was a simple getaway. I opened the door to a room filled with white roses, balloons drifting above like they had been waiting for me, and a heart of flowers spelling ‘Will You Marry Me?’. He knelt down, asked the question, and time felt like it stopped for a moment.

What inspired “Paradise”?
“Paradise” was born from living through the beauty and the mess of love. Growing up with parents who are rock legends taught me that passion is not only about the spotlight. It is about staying through the storms and celebrating the calm that follows. Love is unpredictable. Sometimes the ground shakes and sometimes it feels like the safest place in the world. I wanted the song to remind people that even when paradise is not perfect, it is still worth holding on to.

Your last two singles have been dance tracks. Is that the direction you want to keep exploring?
I will always love music that makes people want to move. There is a kind of joy in it that is contagious. But right now I feel drawn to something more personal. My next project will be melodic, intimate, and full of moments that feel like you have stepped into my journal.

What is Kyle like when you work together on music?
He is the calm to my spark. I hear melodies first. He finds words that twist and surprise. We begin from completely different places and somehow end up in the same creative space where the song feels like it could not have existed any other way.

Do you and Kyle ever feel like a normal couple?
Not in the slightest. Our version of normal is laughing over takeout while planning something wild or turning a quiet afternoon into an unexpected adventure.

Who are you listening to right now?
Sabrina Carpenter because she is clever, confident, and full of charm. Justin Bieber’s new album because watching a friend grow into their most authentic self is something special to witness.

Do you have a favorite song of your mom’s?
“Every Time I Fall Back” has always resonated with me. She wrote it when she was pregnant with me, so the melody feels like it has been in my blood since before I could take my first breath. It is more than a song to me. It is part of who I am.
