IBM's Deep Blue was only the beginning.

In 1996, IBM unveiled Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer designed to compete against the then world champion, Garry Kasparov. Later that year, a group of engineers transported the large black rectangle from Carnegie Mellon to Philadelphia to face off against the Russian grandmaster. The match was to last six games, each opponent playing three games as white and three games as black. Kasparov won the match 4-2, but lost the first game. This marked the first time a computer had beaten a reigning world champion.
