INTERVIEW | Shoffy on Latest Single "Direction"

How He Came to Work with a Member of Maroon 5

"I have a studio setup at home, and can just create on my own schedule, when I'm feeling inspired."

Maybe the key to success is working right from the comfort of your own house. Whatever it might be, singer-songwriter Shoffy has figured it out. With his latest single, he shares a positive, feel good song to help wind down the summer, a project that came together with the help of a member of Maroon 5. Read on to find out how this happened and what he has coming up in the future.

How did you become interested in music?

I can't remember exactly because I was about 3, but was surrounded by music growing up. Everyone in my family played an instrument or sang. First instruments I played were guitar and piano, and I sang as well. I joined choir in 3rd grade, and really enjoyed that. I also had a guitar teacher when I was young - we'd do half an hour of guitar, half an hour of karate. That was a lot of fun. All that helped build my interest and love for music.

You performed at Coachella earlier this year. What was that experience like?

Super cool, the Sahara tent was packed, definitely the biggest crowd I've performed for. AC Slater and I did a track together that was on his album, and that was awesome of him to have me out for that show. It was definitely a bucket list type of thing, having gone to Coachella growing up. Also I'm from L.A., and it's just so hyped up in California.

Earlier this year you released your debut EP. What was the recording process like for that?

I released a single earlier this year, and an album late last year. The recording process for the album was great. I mostly make all the music myself (write, sing, produce, mix, master, instrumentation) with a few collabs here and there. I have a studio setup at home, and can just create on my own schedule, when I'm feeling inspired. It's nice not having to be constrained to limited hours at a professional studio.

What can you tell us about this new track "Direction?" What inspired it?

It's a positive song about really being on the same page with someone and making that commitment to ride it out with that person

How did you come to work with Sam Farrar of Maroon 5?

My management set that up, and it was awesome getting in with him. He really helped bring the chorus of the song to life. After "Direction" we worked on two other tracks along with writer Jake Torrey. One of those two should be another single that we're all excited about.

This is the first track from your upcoming album. Anything you can share about that project?

My album is titled Lenses and will be out in November. I think it has some the best stuff I've ever made on there. Everything from songs about relationships and romance, to the political climate today.

What is coming up next for you?

Gearing up to release a few more singles and then the album, followed by a tour to share the new music.
