Addison Rae Drops Addison – And It Lands On The Runway

Addison Rae Drops Addison – And It Lands On The Runway

  Her sounds, styled.

On June 6th, Addison Rae‘s dropped her long-awaited debut album, Addison. With nods to icons like Lana Del Rey, Madonna, and Lady Gaga and charming pop-dance tunes, Rae is getting raves from critics and the general public alike, cementing her status as a pop star.

Along the way, Rae demonstrates that besides being a multi-talented entertainer, she’s a fashion chameleon. In a nod to her two greatest passions, music and fashion, PopDust takes a trip down sartorial — and, in many cases, memory — lane, reimagining each of Addison’s tracks as runway collections.

New York as Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2000

Is there anything more quintessentially New York than the designers who gave life to the Sex and the City fashion icon, Carrie Bradshaw’s legendary Dior newspaper dress? Probably not. Let me refresh your memory: Carrie, in full apology mode, crashes a lunch she wasn’t invited to, hoping to clear the air and make amends with Mr. Big’s ex-wife, Natasha. Her armor of choice? A dress literally covered in headlines — Galliano’s masterpiece. Defeated after being rejected by her lover’s ex-wife, Carrie struts down the city’s streets in slo-mo. As the hustle and bustle of the city whizzes by and the breeze blows gently through her hair. Time is moving slowly and out of control, yet she feels free — just as Rae sings it in New York

Beyond the Christian Dior’s 2000 Fall/Winter collection’s newsprint, the line includes chiffon dresses, funky hats, pink lace lingerie gowns, voluminous fur coats, cheeky corset pieces, leopard print to the C.D. monogram — everything oozing an irresistible fusion of high fashion and street style — a favorite of New Yorkers, and Addy’s too.

Diet Pepsi as D&G Spring/Summer 2006

With mentions of ‘‘summer love’’ and ‘‘ripped blue jeans,’’ Diet Pepsi goes hand in hand with the carefree, intimate, and lovestruck mood of D&G’s Spring/Summer 2006 collection. The charming collection — full of denim shorts and capris, broderie anglaise dresses, sheer gowns and lacey blouses — are perfect for losing your innocence in the backseat of a Chevy motorcar.

Money Is Everything Gucci Spring/Summer 1996

In Money Is Everything, Rae sings, ‘‘Can’t a girl have fun?’’ In Tom Ford’s Gucci Spring/Summer 1996 collection, the answer is a loud yes — with a drink in one hand and a fur coat draped over the shoulder. The collection marked the climax of the sexy-glam aesthetic that would define Ford’s Gucci era: wildly glamorous and hedonistic. Shiny fabrics shimmered under the runway lights, underscoring the sentiment ‘‘Diamonds are my best friend like I’m Norma Jeane.’’ Effortlessly cool see-through dresses and micro-shorts and zebra prints embody the party-gal energy of Rae’s song — such a fabulous fashion match for Rae’s beat-heavy ode to dance floor queens Lady Gaga and Madonna

Aquamarine as Versace Spring/Summer 2004

Since the world is her oyster, as chanted in Aquamarine, Versace’s sultry and summer-perfect Spring/Summer 2004 collection features a flirty, chiffon minis in citrus, turquoise, bubblegum pink, and sea-glass violet — tones that glimmer in sunlight or against a backdrop of salt-kissed waves. Picture it: The singer is living the mermaid fantasy à la Aquamarine (2006) —  enchanting all those around.

High Fashion as Christian Lacroix Spring/Summer 1999 Couture

As a true fashion anthem, let’s go with a couture collection that serves as the sartorial counterpart to High Fashion. And there’s no couture house like Christian Lacroix. Lacroix’s Spring/Summer 1999 Couture collection matches Rae’s girly electro-pop track given its flamboyant and whimsical flair. An explosion of vibrant hues — saffron, fuchsia, and chartreuse — translates to dramatic gowns, extravagant headpieces, the line says High Fashion — and not cheap love.

Summer Forever as Blugirl Spring/Summer 2005

With its danceable beat and lyrics evoking a carefree summer, Summer Forever radiates Blugirl Spring/Summer 2005. Exuding a bohemian innocence, the collection has whimsical designs and a capricious energy. Think fringed tops, florals, breezy gowns, and hues like deep orange, gold, and cerulean — excellent for a summer rendezvous

In The Rain as Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2000

If Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2000 had a sound, it would be In The Rain. Imagine a moody vibe that’s quite upbeat with a hint of glitch. Whimsical slip dresses gave ‘‘walk in the room, my high heels on, I strike a pose.”

Fame is a Gun as Betsey Johnson Fall/Winter 2000

Like a song you’d listen to for a love once lost but never forgotten, Times Like These is introspective and slightly moody. Yet it still has a charming, pop-dance beat in its own right. Rae channels the soulful rhythm of Chloé’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection. It radiates sexy-boho for the thinking woman. Whether it was the flowing dresses, flirtation with fringe and denim, the somber color palette, the collection, much like in Times Like These, mines self-excoriation and discovery with all its uncertainty as well as the drive to find oneself. In times like these, as life races on, a flowy dress may just may be your grounding force.

Life’s No Fun Through Clear Waters as Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2008

At only fifty-seven seconds long, Life’s No Fun Through Clear Waters repeats only its title line. Still, it carries weight like a quiet mantra, revealing the messy nature of life and the beauty within it. Much like life, Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2006 collection by Andreas Kronthaler was a rollercoaster of emotions and sartorial choices. Think unfastened dresses, twisted ball gowns, and a mix of quirky prints. This reminds us that there’s beauty in mess. And that’s what makes life fun.

Headphones On as Sandy Liang Spring/Summer 2023

Headphones On leans into R&B rhythms with confessional lyricism, its runway interpretation echoes Sandy Liang’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. This childlike take on grown-up dressing mirrors Rae’s nostalgic track. Ballet flats and retro gingham underscore Rae’s reflections on her parents’ relationship. Some of the models wore headphones on the runway, possibly listening to their favorite song — “headphones on.”
