I was raised in a matriarchy on the Upper West Side of Manhattan“. MuMu SharesIt was messy, loud, sometimes manically energetic, sometimes darkly depressed, but it was always full of love. We called our home The Brothel. I was raised mostly by my mother, a brilliant, loving, and brave woman who also suffered greatly with mental illness. When my parents went through a messy divorce, I watched her fall apart. In my nine-year-old mind, standing by her side meant writing my father off completely.

Years later, during the pandemic, I released a song about my father, titled Strange. He heard it, and after fifteen years of being estranged, he reached out and wanted to talk. What was meant to be one call with him turned into 18 months of weekly Zoom meetings in which he told me his entire story from beginning to end. I secretly recorded every meeting and listened back over and over again. I suppose I was looking for answers to why I never felt good enough to be my father’s daughter, desperate to let go of my original heartbreak.

Years later, while putting my own breakup into a song, I realized my lyrics were directly quoting those calls with my father and the melodies were referencing my mother’s pain. I wasn’t just writing about my own heartbreak; I was writing about my parents’.

The Brothel is something between an album, a podcast, a memoir, and a musical. Built from a collage of voice memos, Zoom calls, song demos, and fully produced music, it is meant to be heard from beginning to end. This is my adult self’s attempt to ask the questions my childhood self was too confused to ask, cry the tears my teenage self was too angry to cry, and let go of the anger and sadness of being the child of parents who could only do their best.”

Today MuMu Shares “To The Love“. An emotionally immersive memorial to the feelings we’re not aware of. Featuring deep, dreamy synths and soaring vocals, the song makes a powerful statement about the love we never truly discover.

“To The Love” is out June 24th. Brothel: A Musical Memoir is out July 31st, Brothel: A Musical Memoir  Extended Edition Out August 28th.

MuMu Bio:

MuMu is a pop singer-songwriter from Harlem, NYC. She started her career acting in film, television, and on Broadway. After a career of telling other people’s stories, she made the shift to telling her own. MuMu grew up in a matriarchy, with five sisters and a mom sharing a one-bathroom apartment. With that upbringing, MuMu has a special focus on the female experience and uses this upbringing as creative fuel.

MuMu made her debut in 2018 with the powerful single “Free The Nip”, a feminist anthem that addresses the censorship of the female body. The accompanying music video quickly went viral, amassing nearly 2 million views on YouTube, and the song became a show-closing staple at various Pride events and festivals where MuMu performed with renowned artists such as Pussy Riot and Todrick Hall. “Free The Nip” continues to garner attention, recently licensed for the Netflix animated series Big Mouth (S6:E2).

Since her debut, MuMu has been featured in The New York Times, Variety, IndieWire, and The Hollywood Reporter, and she received critical acclaim for her work in the groundbreaking musical film Best Summer Ever. Plans for 2026 include the release of her debut album, The Brothel: A Musical Memoir. This album establishes a new genre: a hybrid between a podcast, a musical, and an unapologetic pop banger.
