Disco Shrine Mocks Femme Clichés in "Alright" Music Video
A hyper-pop musical middle finger to stereotypes.
Los Angeles-based Disco Shrine, a.k.a. Persian Barbie, recently unveiled the music video for "Alright."
"Alright" is a feminist anthem about liberation and smashing the confines of labels. According to Disco Shrine, "When I first started in music a lot of men would tell me how I should sound, what I should look like, and it usually involved me being hyper girly and sexual. They would make me feel inferior. This video is the embodiment of me finding that power and taking it back. It's proof that girls can appreciate a cliche without being one."
Since breaking through with her debut single, "Up In The Air," Disco Shrine has shared the stage with Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, Dorian Electra, Jay Som, Cuco, Gavin Turek and others, as well as performing at Miami Music Week, NY Fashion Week, The Wiltern, and The Troubador.
"Alright" opens on swanky synths flowing into a happy-go-lucky pop melody that's lifted up with high-energy gang vocals. The video's visuals lean into Disco Shrine's "Persian Barbie" persona; meanwhile, she's surrounded by her friends playing Nintendo and snapping their gum in a youthful fantasia.
