Col Gerrard delivers a confident debut album built on real songwriting
London-born singer-songwriter Col Gerrard has always been drawn to songwriting. Driven by strong melodies, honest lyrics, and proper musicianship, his new self-titled debut album strips things back to what matters and lets the songs speak for themselves.
Across twelve tracks, Gerrard looks back on relationships and the impact they leave behind. It’s not just about heartbreak, but everything around it, the miscommunication, the waiting, the moments that don’t quite make sense until much later. There’s a sense of reflection running through the record, with each song shaped by time and perspective rather than impulse.
“These songs came from looking back at moments I didn’t fully understand at the time,” he says. “Writing them was a way of making peace with the parts of love that don’t always make sense.”
Sonically, the album is built around piano, but lifted by guitars and steady, driving rhythms. His vocal sits front and centre, slightly raspy in places, which only adds to the honesty of it. The album includes songs such as “The Way I Feel” which is beautifully mellow, oozing with emotion and atmospheric instrumentation. “A Place in the Sun” showcases a more upbeat, bright track, with jangly guitars reminiscent of The Beatles. Whereas “Stay by My Side” offers something different entirely. Stripped back, the country-tinged guitars deliver a wholesome sound, with Gerrard’s lyrics feeling like hard-earned reflections, shaped by experience and offering something quietly insightful in return.
The record was produced and engineered by long-time collaborator and Grammy-nominated producer Chris Potter, with sessions taking place across Abbey Road, Metropolis and Kore Studios in London. The result is polished, but still feels grounded and authentic.
“There’s a lot of energy in these songs, but they’re coming from real places,” Gerrard explains. “That felt important to me on this record.”
For a debut, it feels clear and self-assured. No overthinking, no chasing trends, just a solid collection of songs that do exactly what they’re supposed to do.
