At a time when country music is increasingly built by committee, 19-year-old Sela Campbell arrives with something refreshingly rare: a debut project written entirely by herself.

On Lovin’ Made Me Mean, the Virginia native delivers six songs that feel lived-in, sharp-edged, and remarkably self-assured for an artist still in the earliest chapter of her career. The EP immediately calls to mind the qualities that made a young Miranda Lambert such a compelling force: fearless storytelling, a little bit of mischief, a little bit of heartbreak, and an unwillingness to sand down the rough edges for the sake of likability.

Campbell has never hidden her admiration for Lambert; however, she brings other outside influences to the table as well. Growing up on traditional country but also Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alice in Chains as some of her most listened to artists. But Lovin’ Made Me Mean isn’t imitation; it’s inheritance. She’s taking the torch from a generation of women who understood that country music works best when it tells the truth, even when the truth isn’t flattering.

The title track serves as the project’s mission statement. Campbell leans into the complicated aftermath of young love with the kind of wit and self-awareness that feels far beyond her years. Throughout the EP, she navigates romance, disappointment, and self-discovery with an authenticity that can’t be manufactured. Every lyric feels connected to a singular voice because it is: Campbell wrote every word herself in her dorm room.

What makes Lovin’ Made Me Mean especially exciting isn’t just the songwriting; it’s the confidence. On the road, she’s cutting her teeth and refining her live craft with artists like Kashus Culpepper and Carly Pearce.

The result is a debut that feels increasingly uncommon: an introduction to an artist who already knows exactly who she is.

Miranda Lambert’s early records succeeded because they sounded like they could only have come from Miranda Lambert. Lovin’ Made Me Mean carries that same spark. Six songs in, Sela Campbell has already accomplished something many artists spend years chasing: she’s made a case that her voice matters.

If this EP is any indication, country music may have found its next great female songwriter and performer.
