The Only 5 New Year's Eve Movies Worth Watching

Fight the patriarchy with these actually great movies.

No, you are not going to find the love of your life on New Year's Eve, and you are especially not going to find them in Times Square.

New Year's Eve, especially in New York City, is one of the most overly hyped and dramatized holidays in existence. The stakes are far too high for anyone to have an exceptional night, so while we're at least saved from blowing exorbitant amounts of money right before we have to pay rent, let's stay in and find solace within these disturbing movies that actually do NYE justice.

Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary's Baby (1968) | (4/5) | Friends

Mia Farrow captures the true unsettling nature of NYE parties in this cult horror classic. As she unknowingly rings in the New Year within her devil-worshipping neighbor's house, Farrow bursts into tears as she fears her unborn baby is dying. The night slowly gets worse, as we all know, but Farrow's tears eerily feel a little too relatable at the close of 2020.

“It's alright, it's good for her. Let her cry it out," her friend says. Same Mia, same.

Boogie Nights

Best Movie Scenes - Boogie Nights - The Death of Little Bill

I would say Little Bill probably had the worst New Year's Eve ever in 1997. While in high spirits upon his arrival, we watch in a single shot as Little Bill's promising night crumbles apart. When Bill calmly returns to his car and grabs his gun, a part of me blamed NYE for what transpired after. The man just wanted to kiss his wife at midnight for god's sake!

Godfather Part 2

"I know it was you, Fredo."

As shown by the previous entry, NYE can be a truly heartbreaking endeavor. Even the cold-hearted mobster Michael Corleone can attest to that. In what ends up being Fredo's last NYE celebration ever, this iconic scene in Godfather Part 2 actually shows that no one wins on NYE, no matter how hard we try to let things go. I feel for you Michael, I really do.

Poseidon

Poseidon (1/10) Movie CLIP - Capsized (2006) HD

No one, and I mean no one, had a worse NYE than these party-goers. In fact, I bet you none of them have celebrated New Year's since. While the 1972 version remains a classic, be sure to watch the horrendous 2006 remake if you want to really bask in the self-loathing of this crap holiday.

Snowpiercer

Happy New Year! - Snowpiercer

In this flaming hot trash heap of a post-apocalyptic thriller, Snowpiercer is a bizarre adventure that takes place entirely on a train, and it features one of the oddest New Year's Eve celebrations ever. Chris Evans, still gorgeous even while scraggily, is taking mofos out with an axe at a rapid pace when suddenly, for some reason, the enemy soldiers all pause to ring in the new year. It's such a cringe moment of “comic relief," but in a sense, it perfectly encapsulates how ridiculous NYE is.
