2020 Golden Globes Nominations: 5 Exciting Surprises and 5 Outrageous Snubs

Where is the love for "Little Women" and Adam Sandler?

Awards season is about to kick into high gear after the release of the 2020 Golden Globes nominations.

The Golden Globes are one of the more chaotic and entertaining award shows. Between the abundance of star power in the room and the amount of alcohol they consume, the Globes are a fun watch from start to finish. With that being said, the Globes and its voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are also an important feature of awards season. If actors, actresses, and their films are hoping for an Oscar nomination, a successful stint at the Globes will strengthen their campaign.

After the 2020 film nominations were announced, Twitter users, not surprisingly, had their opinions. There were some great surprises involving Parasite and Knives Out. There were also some disappointing snubs regarding Little Women and Uncut Gems. Here are five exciting surprises and five outrageous snubs.

Surprise: Bong Joon Ho, Best Director for Parasite

Madman Films

Choi Woo-shik, Song Kang-ho, Jang Hye-jin, and Park So-dam in Parasite.

Bong Joon Ho wrote and directed the masterpiece that is Parasite, but receiving a best director nomination was no guarantee. Remember that both Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig missed out on Best Director at the 75th Golden Globes (Peele and Gerwig received Oscar nominations for directing), so Bong receiving a nomination is a tremendous surprise. Parasite is not only one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year but of the decade.

Snub: Greta Gerwig, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Motion Picture - Drama for Little Women

Sony

Florence Pugh, Saoirse Ronan, and Emma Watson in Little Women

Speaking of Greta Gerwig, the talented writer/director will be walking home with empty hands because of her absence from the Best Directing, Best Screenplay, or Best Motion Picture-Drama categories for Little Women. This comes as a surprise, because the HFPA responded so well to 2017's Lady Bird even though they ultimately snubbed Gerwig again for director, which is unfortunately a common trend for women at the ceremony. Luckily for Gerwig, Little Women hits theaters on Dec. 25, so with positive reviews and a strong box office, Little Women can still generate a strong Oscar's campaign.

Surprise: Annette Bening, Best Supporting Actress for The Report

Atsushi Nishijima / Amazon Studios

Annette Bening and Adam Driver in The Report

Annette Bening is one of those actresses who should have already won every major award, especially an Oscar. Although favorably reviewed, The Report was not well-received by awards shows. However, Bening can build around her Globes' nomination to draw more buzz for the film, which can be streamed on Amazon Prime.

Snub: Robert De Niro, Best Actor for The Irishman

Netflix

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in The Irishman

De Niro is great in The Irishman. It's arguably his best performance since Silver Linings Playbook .The Irishman is also the favorite to win Best Motion Picture - Drama.

Surprise: Cate Blanchett, Best Actress - Comedy or Musical for Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Annapurna Pictures

Cate Blanchett in Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Did anyone see Where'd You Go, Bernadette? It's a perfectly fine movie, but its box office run came and went with little to no commotion. Well, it certainly drew the attention of the HFPA, who nominated Blanchett for Best Actress. Blanchett is a favorite of the HFPA; this nomination marks her tenth.

Snub: Adam Sandler, Best Actor for Uncut Gems

A24

Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems

For his performances in Jack and Jill and That's My Boy, Sandler deserves to be criticized. However, when it comes to his performance in Uncut Gems, Sandler deserves to be praised and showered with recognition.

Surprise: Christian Bale, Best Actor - Drama for Ford v Ferrari

20th Century Fox

Christian Bale in Ford v Ferrari

Has Christian Bale ever given a bad performance? There have been times where the movie had its issues, but it's rare to watch a Christian Bale film and say that he was the problem. In this case, Ford v Ferrari is a great movie, and Bale's performance is magnetic. Ford v Ferrari got lost in the shuffle after its opening weekend, but critics have not forgotten Bale's performance. Bale should walk away with a Golden Globe for the second straight year after his win for Vice during last year's ceremony.

Snub: Florence Pugh, Best Actress for Midsommar/Best Supporting Actress for Little Women

A24

Florence Pugh in Midsommar

Florence Pugh won 2019. She wrestled in Fighting with My Family, frightened us in Midsommar, and made us cry in Little Women. The fact that Pugh may walk away from 2019 without a major trophy is a disgrace. Here's to embracing and praising Pugh for many years to come.

Surprise: Knives Out, Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical

Lionsgate

Daniel Craig in Knives Out

Knives Out offers the most fun that viewers will have at the theater all year. It's a throwback murder mystery that would make Agatha Christie proud. Between an all star ensemble, a star-making performance from Ana de Armas, and a southern accent from Daniel Craig, Knives Out is one of the best surprises of 2019.

Snub: Shia LaBeouf, Best Supporting Actor and Best Screenplay for Honey Boy

Amazon Studios

Shia LaBeouf in Honey Boy

Shia LaBeouf may be one of the most misunderstood actors of his generation. Thankfully, LaBeouf gets to explain himself in Honey Boy, which is based on LaBeouf's troubled and confusing relationship with his father. LaBeouf gives a powerful, chilling performance that could go down as his magnum opus. LaBeouf may not have received a nomination, but his comeback has only just begun.
