Mipso Releases 'Get Out While You Can'

The evolution of a band's sound.

North Carolina band, Mipso, just released "Get Out While You Can," a totally overhauled version of "Get Out," which appeared on the band's 2013 debut album Dark Holler Pop.

Mipso's musical evolution is evident even in the most perfunctory of comparisons between the two renderings. Basically, "Get Out" is a country hoe-down/Americana number with radiant vocal harmonies, and twangy layers of acoustic instruments. "Get Out While You Can" travels on electric guitars seated on a faster drum-driven tempo, with the melody exuding a So-Cal soft rock energy, infusing the tune with more dimensions.

Not only has Mipso evolved musically, but their technique and proficiency on their instruments has matured to a whole new level. Each member of Mipso – Jacob Sharp (mandolin, vocals), Wood Robinson (bass, vocals), Joseph Terrell (guitar, vocals) and Libby Rodenbough (fiddle, vocals) – exhibits musicianship of an apotheotic quality, articulate and eloquent, with brilliant control.

"Get Out While You Can" opens with deliciously layered guitars full of accents and tasty riffs. Crisp drums and an insistent bass line carry the rhythm, adding a smooth yet beefy push to the tune. Burnished vocals provide the lyrics with stylish contemporary tones and velvety timbres.

Harmonic depth wrought by stratums of sparkling guitars, as well as the impetus of the drums invest the revamped version with resonant volume and buttery smoldering momentum.

Poignant lyrics present the dilemma of choosing between love for a person and escaping to a better life.

"I will fall into your open arms tonight / I will whisper in your ear, everything will be alright / I will count the hours and hope you will understand / I will do the best I can / To get out while I still can."

While 2013's "Get Out" is a good song, the rebuilt and rerecorded version is a great song, full of proximate dynamics, complex flavors, and balanced vocals.

Mipso is currently on their first European tour. Upon their return at the end of the year, they will tour with I'm With Her in February and March.
