Ryan Gibeau Escapes by 'Flying Away'

Honest lyricism amid a soulful melancholy soundscape.

Brooklyn-based alt-pop/rock artist Ryan Gibeau just released "Flying Away."

Inspired by a toxic on-again off-again relationship, Gibeau wrote the song on a plane headed to Los Angeles, as he separated the romantic connection by traveling to the other side of the continent. Putting words and music to the episode allowed Gibeau to process his emotions and finalize the affair.

"Flying Away" is the lead single from Gibeau's soon-to-drop debut album, Quiet Fall, a conceptual album narrating a love story from its beginning to its end. The album explores the idea of change, self-care, and recognizing what's beneficial and what's not.

According to Gibeau, "The album was inspired by a relationship kept together by two people suffering from emotional addiction, what it takes to leave and how to get back on your own feet. The theme of my music centers round the concept of love. Often the music subconsciously surfaces and the songs write themselves. I love the exploration and discovery in my songwriting".

Gibeau's sound blends pop, alt-rock, and orchestral strings into a flavorful concoction.

"Flying Away" opens on flowing strings infused with a soft rhythmic pulse. Gibeau's tender tenor flows over the music and the throb of the bass line and muted snap of the drums accentuate the flow of the strings, giving the music earnest warmth, as well as profound feeling.

The melodic flow projects savors of So-Cal country rock, a kind of harmonic expression of grief, regret, nostalgia, and affection. A tight, searing guitar solo contrasts with the sentimental glow of the strings, providing intense sonic symbolism and a sense of immediacy.
