I Know The Chief Says 'Everything's Under Control'

A cashmere futuristic version of The Bee Gees.

Retro new wave synth-pop with washes of psychedelic disco sums up the 6-tracks on Everything's Under Control, the new EP from I Know The Chief.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, I Know The Chief is made up of James Freeman, Jesse Stone, and Jackson Gray, three dudes who got together to listen to music they liked and then began throwing around their own ideas. One thing led to another and before they knew it I Know The Chief was playing with Miami Horror, Gang of Youths, Clubfeet, and Yacht Club DJ's.

They released "Stay Coloured," accumulating more than 1 million plays, followed by "Miami," and "Free Your Mind," featured on Spotify's Indie Pop! playlist. The band recently signed with the ONELOVE label.

The band explains the EP, saying it "is an exploration of navigating the transition between your school daze/honeymoon period of adolescence and moving into the 'real world'. It's the clashes of ideas like freedom and loneliness, optimism and uncertainty, nostalgia and longing, structure and stagnation, change and ego, control and chaos."

Opening with "Jeff Goldblum's House," a psychedelic synth pop tune with echoes of creamy yacht rock coursing through it, the energy of the tracks are upbeat, shimmering, and infectiously transporting.

The highlights on the EP include "Saudade," with its pulsing, droning synths and '80s vibe, this song exudes new wave disco swirls of color. "Miami" is my favorite track because of its smooth charm and hushed, cashmere-like flow.

"Feel The Way" merges synth-pop with the pulsating momentum of EDM, creating a buttery smooth dance track that bubbles with Bee Gees-like disco washes.
