If anyone knows how to be an amazing husband, dad, and all round first-class family man, it’s Bill Klein.
The Little Couple star turned 41 yesterday, and to celebrate his birthday he’s sharing a few of his top tips on how to be as awesome as he is—lesser men, please take note.
Despite running a successful pet store business, Bill always manages to put family first, and has perfected the art of balancing his career obligations with time for his two adorable children, son, Will, and daughter, Zoey, as well as always being there for his pediatric doctor wife, Jen Arnold.
As Popdust previously reported, the past couple of years have been tough for the Klein family—Jen was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the tail end of 2013, and had to undergo a grueling chemotherapy regime—all while dealing with the arrival of Zoey, whom the couple adopted from India.
Bill was at Jen’s side throughout the entire ordeal, despite dealing with his own health problems—which culminated in him undergoing surgery earlier this year.
Throughout their struggles, the two parents always managed to maintain a bright outlook, and made sure their two children remained healthy, happy and balanced—no mean feat given the often trying circumstances.
So, how does super dad Bill manage it all?
Here’s his 8 top tips for being a first class family man:
Be a solid caretaker:
While Jen was undergoing treatment, and resting up during her subsequent recovery, Bill totally stepped up to the plate, and was her rock throughout. He never showed any signs of fear, despite it being a truly terrifying time for the two of them—he just rolled up his sleeves and took care of business. Bill took on the bulk of parenting duties, and even planned a super special celebration to mark the end of Jen’s chemo treatments.
Find time for romance:
The couple first met at a hospital when Bill was 10 and Jen was 9, and have now been married for over six years—but, that doesn’t mean they take each other for granted. Bill always manages to find time for romance, and does everything in his power to make Jen feel as special and cherished as she did on the day they wed. Earlier this year, while on vacation for Jen’s birthday, Bill planned a surprise wedding vow renewal ceremony, complete with rose petals, specially written vows, and some really serious bling.
"I love you more now than I have before, and I didn't think that was possible, and I am in for the long haul,” Bill vowed to Jen, as we all reached for the tissues.
Know how to celebrate:
If Bill ever decides to throw in the day job, he would be super successful as an event planner! When it comes to celebrating, Bill really knows how to throw a party, and he makes sure every single family milestone is marked with a good old fashioned friends and family get together.
Make time for father-son (and father-daughter) bonding:
Bill is an awesome dad to both kids, whom he loves equally as much—but, you see him really come into his own when he gets to do “guy stuff” with little Will. The father-son duo go camping together, wrestle around, fish, and just hang out and play. There’s a reason Bill has that “dad of the year” title….
Be a fun dad, but teach kids discipline:
Despite being a fun dad, Bill doesn’t shirk from disciplining the children when needed—and, he’s a veritable virtuoso when it comes to managing meltdowns and temper tantrums. Always patient and calm, Bill manages to walk the perfect line of loving parent and disciplinarian.
Balance work and family:
Bill is super aware that having two adopted children from overseas can take even more work than having biological kids, especially when it comes to bonding.
"I feel like there's an obligation to create this bond more quickly,” Bill admits.
To achieve his aim, Bill makes sure he spends as much time with Will and Zoe as is humanly possible.
Sitting Down Like A Family:
If there’s one thing that really stands out when it comes to Bill and Jen’s relationship, it’s their ability to work as a team. They are totally equal when it comes to all aspects of their home life—co-parenting, chores, keeping the kids safe and healthy—and, always make sure their family comes first. As part of their commitment, they strive to always eat dinner together as a family, and endeavor to spend at least one day on the weekend doing something fun for the four of them.
Have a sense of humor:
Anyone who has watched the show knows that both Bill and Jen have a wicked sense of humor. The couple know how to make each other laugh, even when times are tough, and jokester Bill always manages to make Jen smile through even the most stressful of situations.
Happy birthday Bill Klein, don’t ever change, you’re perfect as you are!
