About a year ago, I decided it was about time that I changed my diet to include a wider variety of fruits and vegetables.
I'd always eaten pretty well, but I had gotten into that inevitable take out/ fast food/ frozen meal rut that happens when you get your first office job. I've always taken a multivitamin, but there's nothing quite like eating fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. I started going to local farmers at the weekends to stock up on fresh produce and followed a bunch of health bloggers to get recipe inspo.
But, I always ended up either not having enough time in the morning to get up and make myself a smoothie, meaning most of what I bought would go bad before I had a chance to use it. Or I'd meal prep a giant pot of soup on a Sunday and have to eat the same thing for a week straight. So boring!
A couple of months back, I saw a girl on my morning commute drinking a delicious looking smoothie and saw that it was from Splendid Spoon. A quick search on my phone led me to their site, and it looked like the perfect solution to my problem!
Splendid Spoon is a vegan subscription service that delivers ready-to-eat plant-based soups and smoothies right to your door. They have a ton of different flavors and recipes, and you can totally customize your plan to suit your taste. Everything arrives ready to heat up or drink and is pre-portioned, so you don't have to worry about over-indulging.

When I started to figure out how much I had been spending on fresh produce, I was shocked at how expensive healthy eating can be! I was determined to get a huge variety of fruit and veggies, and that meant I was spending a lot of money, not to mention the fact that most of what I was buying was going to waste. Splendid Spoon sounded like a great way to get the variety I craved, but with no waste or effort on my end.
I signed up for the breakfast and lunch option, which gave me 5 soups and 5 smoothies a week. I woke on Monday morning late, as usual, and grabbed the Power Greens Smoothie for breakfast. It's packed with Kale, which gave me the boost of iron I needed, and the banana made sure it was nice and sweet. I was surprised that it kept me feeling full until lunchtime. I had a crazy day at work that day, so it was really convenient having soup in the fridge ready to eat.
Indian food is my absolute favorite, so the Cauliflower Tikka gave me all of the flavors I love, but without the guilt. It feels like everybody is obsessed with cauliflower these days, and I can see why! It filled me up without being too heavy, and the cashews gave it a great texture and made the soup feel more like a meal.
Splendid Spoon's weekly subscription has saved me money, and time. I was spending well over $100 on fresh produce every week, and this plan only costs $95. I have so much more variety of flavors now too, meaning I never get bored. Plus, no more weekly meal prepping means that I have my Sunday's back! It's great knowing I'm eating a well-balanced and healthy breakfast and lunch, so I can still indulge a little bit at dinner time without having to feel guilty. I've even lost a couple of pounds without trying!
I always thought that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables would cost me valuable time and money, but Splendid Spoon has made it so easy to eat well. Fast food - but healthy!
Recently, this whole staying home thing has been really hard. Yeah, I miss meeting up with my friends and going to my favourite restaurants on the weekends. But strangely, what I miss the most is cooking home-cooked meals from scratch. It really is the little things in life.
We've been avoiding the supermarket as much as possible, so when we go, we stock up on frozen meals that will last and try not to buy many items that go bad quickly - we hate wasting food. But we were getting so sick of frozen food, and I could definitely feel the effect that a lack of fresh, healthy food was having on my body.
I was looking into food delivery services when I came across HelloFresh. I never would have considered a meal kit before, but I missed quality produce so much, I decided to look into it. HelloFresh sends you a box with recipes and fresh, seasonal ingredients every week so you can make wholesome meals at home.
I looked at the recipes and saw they have such a wide range of cuisines - like Korean Beef Tacos and Caribbean Chicken & Spinach-Garlic Rice. They also have classic household favourites like a Beef & Rosemary Cottage Pie.
I realised that using a meal kit service would allow us to make our usual home-cooked meals, and it would also allow us to try new things we never would have tried to cook before, which is exactly what we needed right now. So I decided to sign up. I went with the Classic plan, and meals worked out at just $8.99 each. This was much more affordable than I expected.
Our first box arrived a few days later, and I was super excited to try out a new recipe. For this week, I chose Pesto, Roast Pumpkin & Fetta Risoni, Teriyaki & Sesame Tofu, and Sichuan Beef Strips with Noodles & Asian Veggies.
I started with the Pesto, Roast Pumpkin & Fetta Risoni, and I must say, having the exact amount of all the ingredients was so convenient and saved so much time cooking. The meal turned out delicious! We also loved the Teriyaki & Sesame Tofu - I had never cooked with Tofu before, but HelloFresh made it simple.
The Sichuan Beef Strips with Noodles & Asian Veggies was something completely different for us, we never would have thought to make it, but we ended up loving it. All the recipes were easy to follow and introduced us to lots of delicious new ingredients we hadn't tried before!
Apart from the dinners being so yummy, I have to say, the best thing about HelloFresh is the simple convenience of it. Getting all our ingredients delivered right to our doorstep along with easy-to-follow recipe cards has made dinner much easier and exciting for us. We're back to eating home-cooked meals three times a week, and only have to go grocery shopping once a week. Plus, we're expanding our palettes and culinary skills, which is just an added bonus.
We'll definitely be using Hellofresh for a long time - even after all of this is over.
Our lives can change at any given moment, and that has never been more apparent to me than it is today. Working from home everyday with a full family in the house, slowly getting used to social distancing and making sure we have the right amount of food and basic necessities to last a few weeks were never things I thought I'd have to deal with. I always try to to feed my family a well balanced diet but most healthy foods are perishable. Trying to choose healthy, storable snacks can be very tricky since most packaged goods contain less than favorable ingredients.
Last week, when I went out do that big grocery haul, I was so relieved to see my order from Paleovalley sitting at my doorstep. I few months ago, I decided to sign up for a subscription of their Grass Fed Beef Sticks after seeing them online. I thought these snacks would be perfect for my busy family who's always on the go, it didn't even cross my mind that these would be perfect for staying in as well. Here are the 3 main reasons why I originally signed up:
100% Grass Fed Beef, Free of Chemicals and Pesticides
These are not your average gas station jerky - Paleovalley sources its beef from cattle farmers that take pride in the rearing of their animals. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised only on natural grass pastures in the United States. This ensures a humane and happy environment for the animals. They are continuously moved to various grazing pastures and are never exposed to harmful herbicides, pesticides, or hormones. They also practice rotational grazing which has added environmental benefits, as the soil is naturally rejuvenated by the animals' activity, eliminating the need for chemicals.
Great Source Of Essential Vitamins, Naturally Fermented
Paleovalley Beef Sticks are far more nutritionally dense than their store-bought counterparts since they come from grass fed beef. They contain vitamins like B12, B6, zinc, and phosphorus. Plus, they're a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids. They're flavored using only organic spices, and the unique fermentation process ensures that they stay shelf-stable, without the use of any harmful chemicals. This precaution also means that the sticks contain probiotics, which aid digestion.
High Source Of Protein & Perfect On-The-Go Snack
Healthy and convenient are not traits that usually describe the same product, but Paleovalley Beef Sticks are a delicious way to keep you going between meals. Packed with 6g of protein per serving and come in 5 delicious flavors: Original, Summer Sausage, Jalapeno, Teriyaki and Garlic Summer Sausage. All are free from GMO's, gluten, soy, and dairy. They're the perfect snack to keep in your bag if you're on the keto or paleo diets, or if you just want to be more mindful of what you're putting in your body.
My family is signed up for a monthly subscription to a 4 pack of these (10 sticks per pack) which we have found to be the perfect amount for us. Knowing that we can always have a quick, reliable snack on hand has made committing to a healthy lifestyle much easier. Whether you're trying to stock up, are on a particular diet, or just mindful about your food comes from, Paleovalley Grass Fed Beef Sticks make it easy to stay healthy on the go or staying in. All of the flavor, all of the benefits- none of the guilt!
